Air King A-400 "Minstrel"
1947
Bands: AM
Tube Lineup: 12SA7, 12SQ7, 50L6, 35Z5
A cute midget bakelite radio, this Air King A-400 is a very simple 4-tube variation of the All American 5 superheterodyne design but without an IF amplifier stage that normally uses a 12SK7 tube. If you thought this radio appears anachronistic for 1947, you would be correct because this cabinet design has been used before on earlier models, for instance, the Air King model 222 dates from circa 1938 and has the same cabinet with the difference being the speaker grille design. The cabinet is very similar to the Truetone D-2709 made the same year. The A-400 was available in brown bakelite, painted black or painted ivory cabinets and was originally priced at $13.95.
